I am so delighted to introduce you to the Hathor/SUTIL brand of natural lubricants, as well as the awesome people behind the brand. What better way to do so than to literally introduce you and have them share with all of us some of the key concepts behind their awesome boutique line of pleasure products.

Every once in a while you come across a brand that really knocks your socks off and makes you feel good about being a consumer of their products. For me, I felt that click with Hathor/SUTIL, an independent Canadian lube company carving out a place in the wide world of sex and body safe products. It is an honour to be working with them and have their sponsorship for #WriteBigSexyWords, a project that wouldn’t be possible without their support.

Q: Welcome to ‘Love, Violet’, please tell us about the team that makes Hathor/SUTIL happen!

Portrait of Nathanda (Left) and Mellta Swift, proprietors of Hathor/Sutil LubricantsA: Hathor/SUTIL is a family company run by me, Mellta and  my daughter Nathanda. We have worked together creating and marketing products for 25 or so years . Jonny (my son) joined us four years ago at a time when we really needed him for our expansion. We are a family of artists and dancers; a family that works, creates and plays together.
Q: How did you come to call your line Hathor/SUTIL? What was the inspiration?
A: It was 1989. While working as an aromatherapist I created a line of massage oils branded as Hathor Aphrodisia. The Egyptian Goddess Hathor rules over love, music, dance and creature comforts. The Egyptians use of aphrodisiacs and euphorics helped inspire the original Hathor Aphrodisia line.
SUTIL pronounced “Soo Teel” means “subtle” in Spanish. SUTIL is so subtle that you barely notice it’s there, from its clean formula that feels like your natural body fluids to its modern and understated packaging.
Q: The brand is not new, having started in 1989 – what are some key achievements you have reached along the way?
A: As Herbalists specializing in esthetics we manufactured spa treatment products for ten years before we branched out to the sex industry. We saw a niche to fill. In 2000 we launched Hathor Aphrodisia Lubricant Pure…one of the first natural water based herbal lubes on the market.
Our product was a new concept and it was a challenge for a few years to carve out our niche. We found home and community in the (often woman run) sex positive boutiques popping up across the country. These boutiques considered the health, safety and ethical manufacturing processes in the adult industry. They also offered an educational component to their business.
People could feel the difference with Hathor. No nasty chemicals, no stickiness, no reactions, just luxurious slide. Education and word of mouth became our success!
We launched SUTIL in 2015. SUTIL is our luxury line made with the best eco-ceritified ingredients and following the Eco-Cert Standards. We wanted to take our brand to the next level of purity and ethical manufacturing and we were met with an overwhelming appreciation from our customers and the industry itself. Hathor/SUTIL is now available in select sex positive boutiques across Canada and the U.S. and major cities around the world.
Our journey has been gradual and steady.  As women with family it has been our primary focus to find a rhythm and balance between work, children and play. For this reason it has taken longer for us to make our mark. You might call it a holistic approach.

Q: Which is your favourite product in your lineup of lubes and why?
A:Unlike many brands that boast a formula for every occasion we like to keep things simple and specific. We have three basic lubes to choose from and we have put the best ingredients in all three formulas.
Hathor Original Lubricant Pure is our signature lube, with just 7 simple ingredients, that has developed a cult following with its Santeria inspired logo by Canadian Artist Jan Wade.
Our new SUTIL line made with eco-certified ingredients in two formulas: Luxe and Rich, has you covered for any type of play, they are both super slick and long lasting water-based lubes that feel like silicone.
All three formulas are paraben, glycerin and petrochemical free. We love our lubes for what’s “not there”.  After all, the point is long luxurious slide with no residue,  just a natural wetness.
Q: The Hathor/SUTIL brand is all natural and eco-conscious, tell us a bit about why that is important to you and if there have been any significant roadblocks to providing responsible ingredients and packaging.
A:The basic principles of the Eco-Cert Standard are to ensure an environmentally friendly cosmetic produced by the use of ingredients derived from renewable resources and manufactured by environmentally friendly processes.
This standard includes the absence of GMO’s, parabens, phenoxyethanol, nanoparticles, silicon, PEG, synthetic perfumes and dyes, and animal-derived ingredients. We have chosen tubes that are treated to bio-degrade on the chance that they end up in the landfill instead of being recycled.
Hathor has been active in bringing clean products to the market long before the no parabens/no petroleum trends infiltrated the mainstream market. We see it as a responsibility essential to the health of our families, our customers and the planet.
We cannot escape the fact that the business of manufacturing has a huge footprint. We can, however, choose raw materials that are sustainable and have minimal  greenhouse gas effect in their production.
For the future, we envision 3D printed bottles made from plant cellulose!
Q: What are 3 words you would use to describe your products?
A: Pure. Subtle. Effective.
Q: What nugget of advice would you give to other sex-positive entrepreneurs who are looking to develop a product brand?
A: I’m not sure that I could presume to advise, however, what I had to say to myself many times was “Stick to your vision. Focus on your own creation, not the competition.”
Q: If you could go back in time and change anything about the Hathor/SUTIL journey, what would it be and why?
A: No regrets. As an entrepreneur mistakes are how you find your way. You write the manual as you go.
Q: Can you give us any insight into what might be next for Hathor/SUTIL?
A: At the time of this interview we are in the midst of the Corona Pandemic and we are so thankful that our business is still thriving. Our focus at the moment is to continue making quality lube for our customers.
Q: Lastly, there is so much to love about this brand; what are you most proud of when it comes to Hathor/SUTIL?
A: We are proud of the fact that so many people love our Lube! We are proud that Hathor/SUTIL is recommended by sex educators, pelvic floor therapists and gynecologists. It is such a privilege to be on the bedside tables of lovers across Canada , the U.S. and now around the world, because we truly believe “All we need is Love.”

Thank you so much to the Hathor/SUTIL team for taking the time to let us all get to know them a bit more. If you are interested in their product line, visit their website or find a store near you that carries them.
